Volumetric

In class we were put into teams and given the task to make a work that will deal with the space in F block.  We have two classes to complete this task.

In my group Simon, Dando and Ellyn

Our ideas

1) To hang shoes from the roof, maybe paint the bottoms to create a picture when they are all hanging.
2) Run a string through F Block and around all the artwork and furniture.
3) Bucket full of water and place it in the middle of the space and record the reactions of the public
4) Glue coins and record people reactions when they can't pick them up
5) stitch fabric together and lay it on the floor covering it
6) Giant hop scotch
7) Run and tack sheets all the way from one end of f block to the other

Once we had these ideas we had a consultation with our tutor and decided on doing number 3 the bucket of water.

A problem we had was if someone was going to tip the water and put the bucket somewhere else, so our tutor suggested filling the bucket to the top so that it will spill if anyone tries to move it or take water out. We will film people reactions and make a film. Further in the week we will film the bucket with us walking in straight lines to and from the bucket. Then I'll edit this on the computer to make it look like people are disappearing and appearing from the bucket of water.

Finalising our ideas

We had a bit of trouble deciding which idea to go with because Dando got a bug and has been sick for the last week (chicken from the cafe not good). So she made a facebook message with all us on it to decide what we were going to do. We decided on the bucket eventually because its simple and easiest to complete with the amount of time we had. Our idea was to place the bucket in the middle of the room to see if that would change and play with the space. Instead of recording all of us walking into the bucket like i said above.

Meeting 1

So we organised to meet up on Wednesday afternoon to sort out cameras, equipment and placing buckets. Dando was still sick at this stage so we had to do it without her but that's alright, we did only just. On the Wednesday we set up a camera to practice filming and how long we would film for, where we would place the buckets to stop people walking that way. this would also be included in our final video to compare the paths and distribution that the buckets caused.  We also decided we would install the buckets on Thursday morning before most people came into class.

Installing

We decided on 3 buckets, Ellyn brought them in and also brought extras. So we placed the 3 buckets where me and Simon had put tape on the floor the previous day, this didn't seem enough so we placed more. once we sorted where each bucket was going, we filled them up to different levels, put the camera on a shelf and filmed. Simon didn't have class so he was there watching it all, he moved the buckets accordingly into an arc shape to deter people from walking through them and having to go around, him changing the buckets worked effectively as you can see in the video.

Editing

Once we had the video sorted, i volunteered to edit it as i knew how to edit film (sort of). The camera we used made the files extremely large, i was trying to edit the video on Thursday afternoon, but this wasn't working as the computer couldn't handle such big files. Will showed me how to compress the files, but not until just before i had to leave and catch the bus, so only had time to transfer the files onto the computer and not compress all of them. On Friday when i got into class i started to compress the rest of the files and start editing the one that was already compressed. this was very time consuming. If i had of compressed them all first on the Thursday afternoon it would of all been done before we would present it. Peter our tutor was nice and let us present a little while after everyone else had. But now i know to compress files before i start working with them. Dando wanted to do something to contribute, but there wasn't really much she could do from home so i got her to create the title for the video on Friday morning, because she didn't have much time half of the bucket is not coloured but i think this is effective for the project.
